On May 24, 1950, the Alice May sank after colliding with the St. Anthony in the New Bedford harbor near Palmer's Island. Manuel Vieira was trapped in the forecastle and drowned. The crew of the St. Anthony  rescued the other crew members of the Alice May, Captain Joseph Lima and his son-in-law, Manuel Prenda.
