The dragger Vila Nova sank on September 29, 1974, after colliding with a Japanese fishing vessel 50 miles off Cape Cod. The Tokechi Maru rescued five crewmen: Captain Manuel Neves, Antonio Fernandes, Antonio Mendes Jr., Joaquim Martin, and Jorge M. DaRocha. The mate, Joaquim M. Castro, was lost.
