Captain Kinney was well known along the New Bedford waterfront, having sailed from there for 35 years. He was survived by his wife.
The swordfishing schooner Helen E. Murley foundered in the hurricane of August 26, 1924. She was last seen anchored near Nantucket Lightship. A yellow dory belonging to the boat was found in early September.
The Helen E. Murley was known for rescuing four survivors from the fleet of fishing schooners sunk by a German submarine on Georges Bank during World War I.
