Michael J. Willett, 54, of Acushnet, died unexpectedly March 30, 2015, due to a fishing accident in Nantucket Sound.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Richard A. and Elizabeth (Costa) Willett, he resided in Acushnet for many years. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School.
Michael was the co-owner and Captain of the Hear No Evil and Let It Ride scalloping boats hailing from New Bedford.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed driving his classic Chevy Malibu car. Most of all, he loved spending time with his son, James, especially watching him play hockey.
A special thank you to Russell Isabel, his first mate and all his crewmates for all their valiant efforts and diligence in bringing Michael home to his family and loved ones. Also our deepest appreciation to Eric Orman, Timmy Mello and everyone at Tempest Fisheries for their support and care.
Survivors include his son, James Michael Willett, age 9 and step-daughter, Brianna Haskins, age 15, both of Arlington, MA; ex wife Jocelyn Willett of Acushnet; a sister, Jennifer L. Aguiar and husband Gilbert of Acushnet; two brothers Robert W. Willett and wife Donna of Milford, NH and Paul R. Willett of Vero Beach, FL; his nieces and nephews, Brett and Nicole Auiar, Arianna and Taylor Willett; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was the brother of the late Steve B. Willett.
At about 8:30 a.m. on March 30, 2015, the crew of the Hear No Evil notified the Coast Guard that Michael J. Willett had fallen overboard about 37 miles southeast of Nantucket. The ship's crew, the crews of nearby vessels, and the Coast Guard searched by air and sea. Mr. Willett's body was discovered by the Air Station Cape Cod helicopter crew at about 1 a.m. the next day.
