Jerzy came to the United States from Poland in September 1986. He had made five or six fishing trips since the fall. Mr. Bielski fished in order to support his wife and 13-year-old son.
Jerzy Bielski fell off the Lydonia shortly after midnight on February 20, 1987, in 16-foot seas. Crew members tossed a life raft and life ring into the water, but there was no sign of Mr. Bielski. Two nearby fishing boats and a Coast Guard falcon jet and helicopter joined the search, east of Cape Cod at the northern edge of Georges Bank. Mr. Bielski's body was not found.
