Mr. Fifield was the son of Sylvanus and Leona Joyce Fifield and was born at Oceanville, Maine. For three years he served with the Seabees in the Pacific. Mr. Fifield was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, VFW, and the Royal Order of the Moose. He had lived in New Bedford for 15 years. He was survived by his wife, Beatrice; his parents; a daughter, Patricia Clements of New Bedford; a grandchild; and a sister, Mildred Blood of Rockland, Maine.
On March 30, 1948, Delmont J. Fifield was knocked overboard shortly after the Mary Gannas's nets were lowered for dragging operations. He was unable to reach the rope that was thrown to him. The Mary Canas searched for several hours without locating Delmont's body.
