Louis A. Mello was on his first fishing trip, on the Paul and Michelle, on April 3, 1986, east of Highland Light at Truro. He was working on deck on the boat's scallop dredge when he was knocked overboard by the equipment. The boat was turned around, and the crew tried to find him. They could hear him calling but couldn't see him. The Coast Guard dispatched boats, helicopters, and jets for a ten-hour search, but they too were unable to find Mr. Mello.
