Mr. Medeira had been the skipper of the vessel but was relieved by the owner, Edmund Avila, on May 15. He was known as "Firecracker" along the waterfront.
On June 5, 1960, Arthur Medeira was topmost man of five lookouts on the mast of the Sanson Joy, looking for swordfish. A port side guide line eyebolt parted, and the mast cracked. He fell backward, landing on his back. Four other crew members were injured. The Japanese freighter Matsudosan Maru, with a doctor on board, arrived too late to save Mr. Medeira, who died of a fractured skull.
