Hjalmar Alfred Anderson was born in Oslo, Norway and came America around 1906 to work in the fishing industry. For most of his time in the U.S., he lived on Nantucket.
He was survived by his widow, Olga Anderson of Nantucket, one son, Roy Anderson, and three daughters: Olga Hanson, Mrs. Marjorie Nicholson and Beatrice Anderson.
Around 3:30 PM on January 1, 1941, Hjalar Alfred Anderson was crushed beneath a falling mast aboard the dragger Alice and May.
The crew had been engaged in fishing operations approximately 35 miles south by southwest of Nomans Land, Chilmark, MA, when without warning a stay supporting the 45-foot foremast let go. Plunging suddenly, the heavy spar came down on the back of Anderson. Crew mates rushed to aid the injured man, and the ship was ordered put about to New Bedford.
Despite a desperate six-hour race to port, Anderson was pronounced dead on arrival at Saint Luke's Hospital at 9:00 PM.
