Hans Sorensen was born in Norway around 1895. He came to the United States in 1913 and served in World War I. Afterward, he became a merchantman and then chief mate on an oil tanker owned by the Standard Oil Company for about 17 years until January of 1941, when he came to New Bedford. He kept a room in New Bedford, but his primary residence was in Brooklyn, NY. He was a Free Mason in Brooklyn.
At the time of his death, survivors were listed as a widow, Margit (Skeie) Sorensen, two children, Bertha and Thomas, five sisters in Norway and a brother-in-law, Ole Fastinsen, of New Bedford.
Hans Sorensen, a crewmember aboard the Louis A. Thebaud, was drowned when the vessel was 124 miles off Cape Cod on the evening of July 21, 1942. The incident took place around 10:00 P.M., as Sorensen was working about the deck.
Sorensen's body was recovered by a crew member. The ship was put about to New Bedford immediately to return the body.
