Sigurd L. Ness (or Nes) was born around 1904 in Norway to Lars Ness and Laura (Libnes) Ness. He immigrated to the United States in 1924 to work in the fishing industry.
He was survived by his mother, in Norwa; a sister in California; a newphew, Egel Ellengsen of New Bedford, and a cousin, Hans Ness.
On February 12, 1950, the scalloper Pelican was in icy waters 110 miles east of Pollock Rip Lightship when Sigurd L. Ness was carried overboard by the drag. Crew responded immediately to haul him back aboard the ship and estimated that he was in the water for less than 90 seconds. By the time he was hauled aboard, he had lapsed into unconsciousness. Crew members followed medical instructions received via the Coast Guard to attempt to revive him, to no avail.
Medical examiner Dr. William Rosen later determined that his death was due to immersion and shock.
