James G. (Jimmy) Mendes had been a promising heavyweight boxer in the 1930s. He was the father of five children.
The Clara T. disappeared while fishing off Block Island in a violent northeast storm. The Mildred & Myra had been fishing with the Clara T., but the two boats were separated by the storm. The crew of the Mildred & Myra reported the vessel overdue and in trouble. A seven-day Coast Guard search using aircraft, cutters, an icebreaker, and other vessels was hampered by choppy seas and poor visiblity, found no trace of the boat. Captain Robert Sanchez and James G. (Jimmy) Mendes were never found.
