Acushnet New Bedford, MA

Vessel Details

11/25/1940

In the early hours of the morning on November 25th, 1940, Gustave Beckman fell overboard while the dragger Acushnet was engaged in scallop dredging in the Northern Edge of George's Bank fishing grounds.

For many minutes, the crew could hear cries for help from Beckman, but they could not immediately locate him in the darkness. After several minutes, a beam of the ship's light picked him out and the crew threw him a life preserver. One crew member, William Tsaken, jumped overboard to try and save Beckman, to no avail.

Beckman's body was recovered and returned to port on November 26th.
